Yesterday I attended the BCGSA – Kootenay Chapter meeting at the Creston Golf Club. This is a group of Superintendents from the East and West Kootenay regions and is comprised of about 90 Superintendents, turfgrass professionals and industry representatives. Our chapter meets six times a year to discuss issues that face all golf turfgrass professionals in our region. Our chapter also brings in guest speakers to enhance our education and assist us with continuing education credits (C.E.C’s) for our BC pesticide licenses.
David Wienecke, the Superintendent at the Chambers Bay Golf Course, was the guest speaker at the meeting. David has 25 years of experience in the turfgrass industry as a superintendent, educator and USGA agronomist. David spoke to us about Chambers Bay and its unique challenges as well as hosting the 2010 US Amateur tournament and the upcoming 2015 US Open. It was an excellent presentation which highlighted the need for environmental stewardship at golf courses and the value of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program.
